Last month, we took you from Bourne Bridge to Brewster with stops in Sandwich, Yarmouth, and Dennis along the way. It’s a tour of our state’s most scenic byway, Route 6A. Also known as Old King’s Highway, the 65-mile long journey is one of the most historic roads in the country, with the country’s biggest contiguous historic district within its length. National Geographic has described it as one of the World’s Most Scenic Drives and Smithsonian Magazine says it’s the nation’s most appealing stretch of highway. The highway achieved National Scenic Byway status in January 2021, making it one of only four scenic drives Massachusetts has with this designation. And Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club is centrally located along the route in Brewster. Which is where we pick up our journey! Begin again in Orleans Drive North along Cape Cod National Seashore Visit Wellfleet for a Drive-in Movie Catch up with History in Truro End Your Journey in Provincetown And that does it! There’s plenty to do in anticipation of Spring, and this month, we’ve listed a few activities that should keep you busy until the weather warms and you book your stay with us at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club. Enjoy the last of our damp winter by preparing for a lovely spring; add some color to your wardrobe, spring clean, take yourself for a scenic drive, play a round of [mini] golf, and take-off to gain perspective on the hopeful season ahead. Spice Up Your Wardrobe at Cuffy’s When you’re packing for your trip, consider leaving a bit of space in your bag for some items you’ll buy here. Whether you need it or not, shoulder season is the best time to hit the winter sales and grab the next season’s best merch. Our history dates back to the 1800s, so of course, there are some incredible stories here! Learn all about them and see incredible art, cultural exhibits, nature, and more at 75 plus nature centers, art and cultural centers, museums, and historical societies on the Cape Cod Museum Trail. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites here in the lower Cape, but it’s worth planning head to ensure they’re open. Double check museum hours since they’ll often differ during the offseason. First, a note about the Cape Cod Museum Trail: We’ll start with Brewster Historical Society Museum & Windmill Village. Next, is the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, also in Brewster. When it comes to exploring nature, there’s plenty to do here. Established in 1954, the museum is located in a 17,000-square-foot building on 80 acres of land next to 320 acres of conservation and town land. It’s certainly easy to spend an entire day here! We don’t have room to list all of the exhibits and attractions, but here are a few to give you an idea of how much there is to explore: Of course, some of these will not be open or available during the off-season, but some that celebrate the winter will be! All the details can be found of their respective websites. While we’re at it, the following few museums won’t open again until spring, but we think they’re worth planning ahead for, so have detailed them here. Brooks Academy Museum & A. Crowell Barn Museum is in Harwich is third on our list. Maintained by the Harwich Historical Society, the Brooks Academy Museum is housed in the old Pine Grove Seminary where Sydney Brooks oversaw a two-room high school for boys and girls. Today, it houses exhibits about the town’s history. Also on the museum grounds is the A. Elmer Crowell Barn Museum, which highlights the story of the world-famous bird carver. You can watch real video footage of Crowell in his workshop and carving demonstrations. Get ready to travel back in time at the Atwood House & Museum in Chatham. Home to the Chatham Historical Society, The Atwood House was built by Captain Joseph Atwood in the 1750s. On the ground floor, you can explore eight rooms that contain items from the 1700s to the 1900s, encompassing three centuries of Cape Cod family life. Unlike most museums of this nature, the Atwood House has remained unchanged since its original structure, except for the Marjorie’s kitchen addition in the 1830s plus the addition of electricity. It’s even furnished like it was during the 1700s and 1800s. Also on the grounds are a lighthouse turret and the Nickerson North Beach Camp. While you’re in Chatham, make time to visit the Caleb Nickerson Homestead. The circa 1829 home features an Antique Cape design with a working beehive and three hearths. Also on the property are a reproduction of a post-and-beam outhouse, heirloom kitchen garden, archaeology dig site, and memorial monument. All is open for guided tours from June to September. Additionally, this historic landmark is located where English settlers made their first home in Chatham in 1664. Back to the present day– in a way– The Centers for Culture and History in Orleans is open during the off-season and is definitely worth a visit. Bringing Cape Cod culture and history to life, The Centers for Culture and History in Orleans has three interesting historic sites for activities and learning with public-facing events all year long. The Meetinghouse is an 1834 Greek Revival structure that was once the meeting house for the Universalist Church of Orleans. Now, it houses a museum with special exhibits and cultural programs. See the ‘CG36500 Motor Lifeboat’ while you’re here, famous for its nighttime rescue of 32 crew from the Pendleton tanker in 1952 during a fierce winter storm. The boat is the center of the book “The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue” and the 2016 film “The Finest Hours.” The Hurd Chapel is a newer addition to the property with plans to make it a place for research, meetings, and storage for artifacts and archives. Plan for winter; plan for spring! There’s no time like the present to learn about Cape Cod’s past. We’ll be happy to host you at Ocean Edge whenever you plan your visit. It’s true; there really is no place like home, and that’s why we want you to come to ours this Thanksgiving. Give thanks with us this 25th of November, and discover your home away from home. No matter what time of year it is, we pride ourselves on creating cozy, warm, and inviting accommodations for you and yours during your visit to Cape Cod. But if you come for Thanksgiving, you’ll get to relax in your comfy surroundings while the mansion’s Executive Chef Phil Flath and his culinary team stay busy in the kitchen. That means you’ll get the best of both--a delectable meal without the cleanup! When you dine-in, expect all of your Thanksgiving favorites plus a few of our own, including oysters, shrimp, lobster, and chowder. This year we’re serving dinner two ways--buffet style at the mansion with stunning views of Cape Cod Bay or hassle-free, pre-order takeaway. Check out the menu for both on our website. If holidays are about connecting with those you care about most, we insist you reserve your seat at our table. Call or email us to make your reservations today. You won’t leave hungry! This month, we’d like to give you a short list of some of our favorite activities to enjoy on the Cape, from the spectacularly spooky to the delightfully delicious. Whether it’s something for the kids or the adults, or anyone in between, there’s guaranteed fun for everyone. Fall is gorgeous on the Cape no matter how you spend it, just as long as you don’t say no to some of the activities scheduled right around the corner from Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club!
Book a Haunted Cape Cod History Tour Pick a Pumpkin on Cape Cod Toast to Oktoberfest It’s an understatement to say the Cape is beautiful in the fall. The truth is, it’s gorgeous in every season. But if we aim to embrace the seasons as they come, autumn might be the ideal time to find your way into the path of changing leaves, harvest festivals, and craft beer tastings to wash it all down with a few sips of a crisp local brew. Thirsty yet? September is here to be toured and tasted! It’s an understatement to say the Cape is beautiful in the fall. The truth is, it’s gorgeous in every season. Thirsty yet? September is here to be toured and tasted! Once the kids are back in school and families are back to the daily grind, Cape Cod tends to see far fewer crowds making walking on the beach or in the woods even more relaxing and refreshing. So get out there and experience the privilege of having the island to yourself. Some of our favorite places to explore include the following: Nickerson State Park in Brewster covers 1,900 acres of maintained parkland, with plenty of wooded trails and ponds to explore. Some are stocked year-round with trout for the fisherwomen and men in the family, and for the bikers in your group, there is an 8-mile path that connects to the 22-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, a paved trail winding through six picturesque Cape Cod towns. Beebe Woods in Falmouth surrounds Highfield Hall & Gardens and covers 383 acres of forest with hiking trails. Named after the Beebe Family that created the Highfield estate, Beebe Woods hosts an extensive network of walking trails that cover miles of wooded ridges and steep-sided hollows all encircling a picturesque pond know as the “Punch Bowl” that lies deep within the Woods. Highfield Hall and Gardens boasts a beautifully restored Victorian estate surrounded by 400 acres of conservation land, peaceful walking trails and an interactive musical garden. Taylor Bray Farm in Yarmouth Port is an historic, working farm with a beautifully maintained boardwalk winding through Black Flats Marsh and the dunes of Chapin Beach. Visit the more than 350-year-old farm house, the friendly farm animals, and the bees, after an easy stroll along the wooded Don McIntyre trail. Hayrides are offered in October. Journey into the heart of a tranquil and inspiring wood on the Beech Forest Trail in Provincetown. The mile-long path that surrounds a wetland preserve and passes by the reflective Beech Forest Pond and dunes is perfect for all ages and abilities. Enjoy great bird watching opportunities all along the way, especially in the fall. Once you’ve walked the trails and worked up a thirst, make your way to the fairgrounds in East Falmouth to toast to fall at the Cape Cod Brew Fest. There, in its 10th year, more than 300 beers will be on tap from more than 50 regional breweries. These include Mighty Squirrel, Devil’s Purse, Naukabout, Whalers, Tröegs, Untold Brewing, and more. Of course, food vendors will be on parade, too, so you can eat while you sip, plus enjoy hours of live music on the main stage. It all happens between 2:00 and 5:30 pm on September 24th. Beverage samples are included with your ticket price and so is the custom glass that you’ll be handed as you leave. Ok, we’ve got one more treat for you. If you like theatrical performances, the Tennessee Williams Theater Festival will be held this month at a handful of venues around Provincetown, the same weekend as the Cape Cod Brew Fest. Raising the curtain for the first time since 2006, Tutti Frutti Tennessee Williams will deliver the artist’s best Broadways hits and radical writing from every decade between the 1930s and 1980s. What’s more, you’ll get to experience “the strange, the crazed, and the queer” on stage and afterwards, take a “soundwalk” by popping in your headphones and ambling along a choose-your-own-adventure style sensory walk around Provincetown. It’s all happening this month on the Cape! Don’t delay in booking your stay at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club so you can enjoy early autumn’s finest offerings by the water. Cape Cod is best known for its quaint villages, delicious seafood, tidal pools, ocean beaches, and lighthouses. But what you might not realize, is that there are 18 of these beautiful towers in the sand! Given the cape’s peninsular location, lighthouses have played a critical role in keeping fisherman and ship captains safe as they near the coast of Massachusettes. Given the cape’s peninsular location, lighthouses have played a critical role in keeping fisherman and ship captains safe as they near the coast of Massachusettes. So while you’re here, see how many you can visit! Some of the Cape’s lighthouses are better known than others, with a handful regarded as national landmarks, their likenesses painted thousands of times over and their photos decorating social media. We’ve gone ahead and listed a few here that we think you should visit and photograph, too. Nobska Lighthouse was built in nearby Falmouth more than a century ago, in 1876. The 40-foot brick and cast iron lighthouse has since been restored and is open to visitors during the summer on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to noon. Other buildings on the property include an oil house, garage, and storage building, all of which you can see when you’re there. The keeper’s house is in the process of becoming a museum. Check the website for more details and to plan your visit. The Three Sisters of Nauset are a trio of lighthouses in Eastham, Massachusetts that were once lost to erosion, twice rebuilt, moved, and then reunited. Their evolution began back in 1836 when they were commissioned to be built by concerned families of local seamen. But they were constructed too close to the sea, and after only five years, fell into the water. In their place, but further inland, three new 22-foot wooden towers were erected. In 1911, the center tower was moved and attached to the original keeper’s house, and the two other sisters moved a couple of times years later. After many years of service, the central tower was decommissioned and replaced and all three sisters were reunited. The property is open for free, public tours where you can see history in action. Highland Light is the oldest lighthouse on Cape Cod. Commissioned by George Washington in 1797 as the 20th lighthouse in the nation, it was built 500 feet from the water’s edge. It wasn’t until 1857 that a newer brick lighthouse was built in its place as the tallest on the peninsula at 45 feet. Recently closed for major structural repairs, the tower is now completely refurbished. Even though you can’t climb it, the property itself still makes for wonderful photo opportunities. Henry David Thoreau was so inspired, he wrote an essay about it in Atlantic Monthly. Highland Lighthouse tours run Saturday through Friday with the first 30-minute tour beginning at 9:15 am and the last tour beginning at 4:30 pm. Race Point Light Station sits on the tip of the Cape Cod peninsula in Provincetown. It was built in 1876 using cast iron for its exterior and red brick for its lining. The property features an 1874 signal building, 1876 keeper’s house, and 1902 oil house. All of those years are reflective of its tumultuous history. Race Point was first lighted in 1816 25 feet above sea level. It was designed to be one of the earliest revolving lights to be distinguishable from other lighthouses on the Cape. The fog bell that was installed in 1852 was replaced by a steam-driven fog signal in 1873. By 1876, the old stone tower needed rebuilding, and was replaced by the present-day 45-foot brick-lined cast-iron lighthouse. It was electrified in 1957, inspiring the lighthouse’s subsequent modernization including a solar-powered fog signal and a wind turbine. Check the website for tour details and schedules. At low tide, a trip to any of the town’s Cape Cod Bay beaches is a wonderful way to see the Brewster Flats. There, the receding ocean water reveals clam beds, tidal pools, and almost two miles of sandbar for you to stroll, explore, or simply recline on your beach chair. Some of these powdery sandy beaches include Ellis Landing Beach, Crosby Landing, Breakwater Beach, and Linnell Landing Beach among others. Craving shade? How about a walk through the woods instead? We like Nickerson State Park with it’s 1,900 acres of green space and eight miles of bike trails, and three ponds for fishing, kayaking, swimming, and more. Cape Cod Rail Trail probably has one of the most extensive bike trails with paved paths that traverse the nearly 30 miles between Yarmouth in the west to Wellfleet in the east. If you’d like to take a slower pace, consider staying in town to visit Cobb House Museum & Windmill Village. This historical site includes a restored home from the late 1700s, five permanent galleries, as well as a refurbished windmill. Finish your evening with one of the best cultural experiences in town at an outdoor production performed by local children at the Cape Rep Theatre. These and countless other activities are sure to fill your bucket this summer at the Cape. Speak with our concierge to learn more about how to plan your stay! But don’t let it’s small size fool you; since its founding centuries ago, Provincetown has grown to become a beloved cultural epicenter. Provincetown, or “P-Town,” as the locals call it, traces its history back roughly 400 years, when Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower docked in its harbor and signed the Mayflower Compact. Although the Pilgrims eventually elected to settle in nearby Plymouth, Provincetown was nonetheless immortalized. Officially settled in 1700, the town gradually developed into its current state. Provincetown has something for everyone: The Pilgrim Monument, commemorating the first landfall of its namesake travelers; Herring Cove Beach, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore; and the lively, inclusive Commercial Street, to name a few attractions. It’s also a haven for the LGBTQ community. There’s more to Provincetown than meets the eye; and judging by some of the individuals who’ve called it home, including Tennessee Williams, Jackson Pollock, Kurt Vonnegut, and Anthony Bourdain to name a few, you’re bound to have a memorable visit. With April and May on the horizon, the pleasant arrival of springtime weather and sunshine in Cape Cod is just around the corner. Celebrate the season of rebirth this year with a day spent at the Cape Cod National Seashore. The Cape Cod National Seashore was officially created by President John F. Kennedy on August 7th, 1961. It comprises over 43,000 scenic acres of protected beaches, dunes, and woodlands, spanning from Chatham to Provincetown. This designated seashore park is open to the public of Cape Cod, allowing visitors to relax on soft sands, hike through the White Cedar Swamp, and even spot harbor seals between the Atlantic surf! One of the most interesting sites located within the Cape Cod National Seashore is the Dune Shacks of Peaked Hill Bars Historic District. Located in Provincetown and Truro, these historic dune shacks were built in the 1920s as beachside homes for American writers and artists. We recommend a stroll to this fascinating destination for a picture-perfect piece of Cape Cod history. For visitors and locals alike, Brewster, Massachusetts, is one of Cape Cod’s most charming destinations. The story of the lovely location that surrounds Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club begins in 1656. Brewster was first established as a northwestern parish of Harwich. The town then separated from Harwich as the wealthier northern parish in 1693. Named for Elder William Brewster - a storied religious leader of the Plymouth Country Pilgrims - the town was built around America’s first water-powered grist and woolen mill, located at Stony Brook. Throughout the 1700s and 1800s, wealthy sea captains in Brewster built grand mansions and homes, many of which can still be seen throughout the town today. Brewster's sea captains made livelihoods transporting many imports and exports, including coal, coffee, mahogany, rum, sugar, and fish. Nowadays, many visitors travel to Brewster to see the pleasant beaches, clam beds, tide pools, and more. Historic attractions - like the Crosby Mansion and the Higgins Farm Windmill - can still be explored alongside scenic New England shores for a valuable look at Brewster’s past. Cape Cod has a long and fascinating history that's worth reading about before future trips. Cape Cod has a long and fascinating history that's worth reading about before future trips. The sandy peninsula of Cape Cod was created during the Ice Age. Because of its exposed location jutting out into the Atlantic, many early explorers visited Cape Cod. The Wampanoag people lived here for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived. The Pilgrims first landed in America on the lower tip of Cape Cod, making this a hot spot for early American history. The Pilgrims decided that this peninsula was too sandy to support their lifestyle, and they sailed across Cape Cod Bay to establish Plymouth. Cape Cod's human history has always been linked to the sea. For early Native American fishermen and the beach-going tourists of today, Cape Code has become synonymous with an ocean-loving lifestyle. In 1848, the first train service from Boston began. In the 1930s three bridges went up, and tourism on Cape Cod soared. Today, the natural landscape of Cape Cod is not enormously different from its past. Swaths of forest, dune, beach, and marsh separate small villages. Unspoiled natural beauty makes Cape Cod a dreamy destination for visitors from the mainland and worldwide. Paws up! This month, we'd like to say a very heartfelt thank you and show our support to our Cape Cod healthcare workers and first responders for their recent actions and efforts. Paws up! With everything from antique furniture to jewelry to artwork—you can find the perfect keepsake to remember your time here for years to come. Less than an hour’s drive from our resort, Provincetown sits as one of Cape Cod’s most historic and artistic towns. Dating back to the 1600s, Provincetown was a stop for pilgrims on the Mayflower, before reaching Plymouth. You can learn more about the town’s historical significance by checking out the museum and 252-foot Pilgrim Monument towering above the town’s winding streets. For those with a love for the arts, you’ll want to check out the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, which highlights the impressive works of artists who have lived and worked in the area over the years. With peaceful beaches, nature paths, and local businesses and shops to explore, Provincetown is a fun, fulfilling day trip that the whole family will enjoy. As you explore the narrow streets of the town, you’ll see exactly why we love calling Cape Cod home. Sometimes, the journey is just as magical as the destination. See for yourself this month by making your way out to Buzzards Bay to board the annual Christmas Train. Destination? The North Pole! Experience holiday magic like you’ve never felt before as you depart the station singing Christmas tunes and cheering on the dancing elves in the aisles. On the train, enjoy fresh cookies and hot chocolate to keep you warm until you arrive in Christmas Town. Gather round the windows to look at the incredible sights and be sure to wave to Santa and his elves to get them to climb on board and say hello. This is a total must here on Cape Cod, an exciting event that everyone in the family will love. Hot Tip: pre-order your tickets online, they sell out fast! When you’re deciding where to go for your annual golf trip with your buddies, a lot is riding on your choice. You can go for a popular destination with a glut of courses like Myrtle Beach, or you can get a little more creative with your thinking. You’ll want a course that you can play several times without getting bored, and a venue that offers more than just golf. There are 24 hours in a day, after all, and sadly we can’t spend all of them on the golf course. Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club on Cape Cod offers much more than the typical hotel pool, crowded beach and chain restaurants you’ll find at many golf destinations. The unique location and natural beauty in and around the resort make it a beautiful, memorable destination. Kodak moments and one-of-a-kind attractions abound as the Cape Cod experience demonstrates why it’s a world-class vacation destination. The main attraction for a golf group outing will always be the golf course, and Ocean Edge’s 18 hole track is truly a gem. Redesigned in 2007, Ocean Edge is the only Nicklaus Design on Cape Cod. A private course that is only open to its Members and Resort Guests quickly earned a reputation as one of Cape Cod’s best golf course. It winds its way through the forested hillside and several ponds, but it’s the architecture and greens that really stand out. The signature 17th hole, an uphill, 600-yard par 5, is a monster that’ll be the key to winning your matches. A well-placed drive that avoids the cleverly placed fairway bunkers will set you up for a nice lay-up. But the approach shot to the green is no walk in the park, as a dastardly false front sits in wait to repel any shot that’s mis-hit or spins too much. It’s a fantastic course in a beautiful setting, and the spacious, inventive greens increase its replay value. Memberships are at a premium here because of the course’s impeccable conditions and high replay value. Ocean Edge offers a Stay & Play package where you will have the ability to play unlimited golf during your stay. You can stay at either The Mansion which is a Victorian-style building (perfect for history-lovers) or to The Villages, a collection of cozy villas, which is near the golf course where you can practice with your strike wedge. You can book your package directly here. Aside from golf, there are plenty of attractive options for swapping stories and setting up the next day’s bets. The Beach Bar is perched atop wooded dunes with a stunning ocean view. The Linx Tavern offers local favorites like New England Clam Chowder and lobster rolls, while the flagship Ocean Terrace is a perfect spot to down a dozen oysters and share small plates. You can get to know the local oyster industry and sample some of the freshest the sea has to offer on a signature Oyster Tour or enjoy kayaking and paddle-boarding in the calm pond waters or the more thrilling Bay Pines Beach. With a majestic golf course, numerous unique off-course activities and a wealth of dining and cocktail options, Ocean Edge Resort should be on your list for your next golf group outing. Please contact our Director of Golf Brett Gilmore for more information to book your next golf outing. We know there’s no place like home, but we like to think our property comes as a close second. This is especially true during the holidays. We pride ourselves on creating a cozy, warm, and endlessly inviting place for you to call home during your visit to Cape Cod and if your trip falls during Thanksgiving, you’re in for a special treat. Our signature restaurant, Ocean Terrace, will provide the perfect setting for a filling and festive holiday meal without any of the cleanup. Holidays are all about connecting with those you love, so sit back, relax, and toast to a Thanksgiving you and your family won’t soon forget. Call 508-896-9000 to make reservations. Less than a five-minute drive from our property, you can escape into a whole new world entirely. At Nickerson State Park, say goodbye to the sand dunes and salt marshes that Cape Cod is famous for and enter a world of sprawling hills, dense woodlands, and shimmering ponds formed from glaciers over 10,000 years ago. Spanning across 1900 acres, this state park is home to campsites, hiking trails, biking paths, picnic areas, and so much more. Gather your friends and family and enjoy a day (or two) of exploring the natural beauty of this special respite of Cape Cod. Start your morning off with a moderate hike—some paths even connect to the rail trail—or spend the afternoon kayaking on Flax Pond. The park even has catch-and-release trout fishing year-round! No matter how you like to retreat into nature, you can create a day uniquely you at Nickerson State Park. From community parades to stunning firework shows, there are so many ways to celebrate the Fourth of July around the Cape! In Yarmouth, you can catch more than 30 sand sculpture creations at the annual Sand Sculpture Trail, which you can view through the summer. For community Fourth of July parades, look to communities like Falmouth’s, which will kick-off the big day with their annual parade of bikes, carriages, and even a cannonball shooting. Then, join in on nearby picnic celebrations with great food, music, and festivities. To end the night, Cape Cod goes all out with firework displays as you’ve never seen. The Falmouth Fireworks have been voted as some of the best, with fun, patriotic music to go along. You can also find fireworks along Provincetown Harbor and Pleasant Bay, where you can take cruises for prime viewing! However you spend your summer holiday, Cape Cod offers a Fourth of July you won’t forget. On the other side of the peninsula awaits an exciting coastal adventure! Monomoy Island Excursions is a family-owned business that leads visitors and locals out to the barrier island of Monomoy to go seal-watching. This wildlife refuge has become a home for thousands of harbor and gray seals over time, making each and every visit a thrilling treat. But the fun doesn’t end with the seals. On the voyage, you’ll visit Wychmere Harbor—one of the most scenic harbors on the Cape—and the Stage Harbor to get a close look at the beautiful Stage Harbor and Chatham lighthouses. On these tours, you get so much more than just animal-watching, but a real experience of the magic of sea life on Nantucket Sound. Monomoy Island Excursions runs cruises several times each day, each tour lasting an hour and a half, with a wildlife expert on board to answer all of your questions. You’ll definitely want to make time for this family-friendly afternoon adventure. This month the annual Nantucket Wine & Food Festival returns for another celebration of incredible winemakers and chefs from all over the world. Just 30 miles off our beautiful coast—and a short ferry ride away—Nantucket will buzz with excitement over five jam-packed days of tastings, seminars, dinners, and more. May 15-19, you can take your pick from select events on the all-day schedules or go all in for the entire festival, which has been held annually for over twenty years. No matter what’s on your itinerary, you’ll be able to dive head first into the distinguished and dynamic worlds of cuisine and winemaking. Meet with chefs, sommeliers, presenters, and expert speakers to gain insight into the craft and art of wine and food. With the stunning coast as the festival’s backdrop, the five-day event is simply not to be missed. With prime access to the popular Cape Cod Rail Trail, you and your family can experience Cape Cod like never before right outside our resort. With 26 miles of breathtaking backdrops and lush scenery from South Dennis to Wellfleet, the rail trail is a fun and active way to explore all over Cape Cod on your own terms. Mostly flat terrain—with some minor grades around the Lower and Outer Cape areas—you can plan a route for as little or as long as you’d like. Rent bikes right here on site from the shops on either side of our resort, and you’ll be well on your way. The rental shops offer reasonable fees, starting at $15 for two hours or $35 for a full day for adults, and $10 for two hours or $25 for a whole day for children. At first glance, Provincetown seems insignificant. Located at the tip of Cape Cod, this village is home to just under 3,000 permanent residents. Its size, however, belies its significance; and since its founding centuries ago, it’s turned into an unlikely cultural epicenter. Provincetown – or “P-Town,” as the locals call it — traces its history back roughly 400 years, when Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower docked in its harbor and signed the Mayflower Compact. Although the Pilgrims eventually elected to settle in nearby Plymouth, Provincetown was immortalized. Officially settled in 1700, the town gradually developed into its current state. P-town has something for everyone: The Pilgrim Monument, commemorating the first landfall of its namesake travelers; Herring Cove Beach, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore; and the lively, inclusive Commercial Street, to name a few attractions. It’s also a haven for the LGBT community. There’s more to Provincetown than meets the eye; and judging by some of the individuals that called it home — Tennessee Williams, Jackson Pollock, Kurt Vonnegut, and Anthony Bourdain among them — you’re bound to have a memorable visit.Top 15 Things to Do Exclusive to Cape Cod

Let’s set the record straight; the Pilgrims did land at Plymouth Rock, but they arrived on Cape Cod first. Pilgrim Monument on One High Pole Hill Road, Provincetown commemorates the historic landing and provides one of the most spectacular panoramic views around. Just south, in Eastham, visit First Encounter Beach, the site of the first meeting between the Wampanoag tribe and the Pilgrims.
New Englanders eat a lot of ice cream. They also devour local lobster. Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium on Main Street in Falmouth combines these two New England favorites into a sweet and savory lobster ice cream. The butter-flavored ice cream with bits of real lobster is available year-round.
Stretching from Chatham to Provincetown, the Cape Cod National Seashore is the crown jewel of the Southern New England coast, with six swimming beaches along 40 miles of coastline. Come for the ocean waves, sheltered coves, salt marshes, historical lighthouses, and well-kept paths.
The most famous of all New England oysters, Wellfleet’s are farmed in protected flats of cold, fast-moving, pristine waters. It's this trifecta that gives the bivalves their briny, sweet flavor. Slurp down a raw one at one of Cape Cod’s many bars and restaurants.
The Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth provides a glimpse into real pirate life through recovered artifacts and interactive exhibits. The Whydah, discovered off the coast of Wellfleet in 1984 was originally a slave ship before being overtaken by pirate Captain Samuel Bellamy in the Caribbean and later shipwrecked off Cape Cod Today, you can climb aboard the ship’s life-size replica and see and touch 300-year-old silver and gold pirate coins that were found on board.
Just minutes from the beach, the Cape Playhouse in Dennis brings stars of stage and screen to Cape Cod every summer. What started in the 1920s as a way for actors to escape the unyielding heat of New York City summers has turned into a New England tradition. Legends such as Bette Davis, Julie Andrews, Humphrey Bogart and Gregory Peck have graced the Cape Playhouse stage.
Summer baseball on Cape Cod is one of the hottest tickets in town, but you don't need a ticket to see it. The Cape Cod Baseball League, the nation's premier amateur baseball league, doesn’t charge admission to any of its 44 regular season games; just bring a blanket, grab some popcorn and enjoy one of Cape Cod’s best summer evening traditions. Your odds of watching someone who will someday play in Major League Baseball are good; notable Cape Cod Baseball League alumni include Hall of Famers like Thurman Munson and Craig Biggio, and current New York Yankee, Aaron Judge.

One of the most iconic landmarks around, the Cape Cod Canal is as picturesque as it is functional. The seven-mile canal is an active shipping channel that also provides postcard-worthy panoramas; a scenic bike trail runs along both sides of the canal, and is a great way to take it all in on bike or on foot.
As unlikely as it seems, the film whose tagline is "Don't go into the water" has been embraced as a cult favorite among water-loving Cape Codders. From Fourth of July until Labor Day, visitors and locals alike pack into the historic 1915 Chatham Orpheum Theater on Main Street in Chatham for frequent showings of the 1975 classic. Don’t miss it if you’re planning a trip for this summer!
Edward Gorey, renowned illustrator of the macabre, lived in this Cape Cod cottage on Strawberry Lane in Yarmouth Port from 1979 until his death in 2000, and filled the house with eclectic flea market finds. The home is now a museum showcasing his most treasured items.
Is it possible to eat just one potato chip? Find out at the Cape Cod Potato Chip factory in Hyannis, the site where the humble vegetable is transformed into one of America's favorite snacks. A fun photo opp involves posing with your Cape Cod Potato Chips in front of Eastham’s Nauset Light, the picturesque lighthouse featured on the bag.
The peaked hills and majestic dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore make for an otherworldly environment- a sea of red beach plums and wispy beach grass set against a stunning ocean backdrop. For those who want to venture deep within, Art’s Dune Tours takes adventure seekers through protected lands and the “village” of dune shacks. If exploring on foot, be sure to follow the established paths and take care to avoid stepping on vegetation.
Quaint seaside village meets top science research destination. Woods Hole is home to the world-renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Marine Biological Laboratory, as well as a working drawbridge, Nobska Lighthouse, eclectic shops and eateries, a small aquarium and stunning views of Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound. You can get there by car, but parking is limited; a more scenic route is via the Shining Sea Bikeway, or aboard a Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority trolley in season.Continuing a Scenic Drive on the Cape’s Route 6A
Continuing a Scenic Drive on the Cape’s Route 6A
After a good night’s sleep at Ocean Edge Resort (and maybe even a round of golf), you’ll hop back on 6a to go through Orleans. During the Revolutionary War, the town was captured twice by the British twice, so residents decided to give it a French name as a show of gratitude for the French support. Also of note, Orleans was the only U.S. town attacked by the Germans during World War I. French General Pershing communicated to the U.S. government through the French Cable Station, which is now a museum in Orleans. Another historic site is the Jonathan Young Windmill, which still has much of its early machinery and parts intact.
For a bit of fun while you’re there, check out Cape Escape Adventure Golf. It has an 18-hole mini-golf course with a nautical theme, including fishing boats, waterfalls, and an active koi fish pond.
Leave Orleans by drivinh north to Eastham. You’ll notice as you enter the town that Route 6A disappears into Route 6, also called the Mid-Cape Highway. The main attraction of this charming town is the Cape Cod National Seashore, which President John F. Kennedy established in 1961. Forty miles of pristine sandy beach, marshes, ponds, and uplands support diverse species in this protected area. Lighthouses, cultural landscapes, and wild cranberry bogs offer a glimpse of Cape Cod's past and continuing ways of life. You just have to stray from the highway a bit to see it all.
Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is worth visiting for swimming, and has consistently been named one of the top ten beaches in the U.S. by Travel & Leisure Magazine. For a dose of history, walk around the Three Sisters lighthouses. Or visit Cape Cod’s most photographed and well-known lighthouse, the Nauset Lighthouse. It’s been an important part of the town’s cultural and maritime history with a beach nearby by the same name. When in town, stop by the Salt Pond Visitor Center to help plan your visit.
When you’ve had your fill of the seashore, continue on the scenic highway to enter Wellfleet. Wellfleet offers an inviting, small-town experience with a busy waterfront and several wonderful dining and shopping options. In this section of the Cape Cod scenic drive, you could stop by Wellfleet Cinemas for more than a drive-in or indoor movie. It has a flea market, mini-golf course, and dairy bar with hard-packed and soft-serve ice cream. Movies start after Memorial Day weekend. Or, to continue on your nature kick, make a quick stop at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary where you can hike the trails to a salt marsh, venture through the pine woodlands, or go out to a sandy barrier beach.
Truro is the next town that Route 6 passes through, and Route 6A separates from it in the northern section, although, there it will be called Shore Road. As part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, the Highland Light is the oldest and tallest lighthouse on the peninsula, and it’s located on a 120-foot cliff. The Highland House Museum next to it exhibits fishing and whaling gear, shipwreck artifacts, and ship models.
For a change of pace, grab a glass of wine at Truro Vineyards. You can tour the vineyard and winery if you schedule it ahead. Before leaving, purchase some wine from the gift shop located in a fully restored 1830s farmhouse.
Your last stop, as you approach the tip of the peninsula, is Provincetown. Here, the National Scenic Byway is known by three other names: Commercial Street, Bradford Street, and Province Lands Road. The many names might be indicative of the many choices you’ll have to make regarding food, fun, and activities. It’s bustling with more to do than you have time for in a weekend. And its not all commercial; at the end of Route 6A (Province Lands Road) is Herring Cove Beach, which has amazing sunsets. And at more than 252 feet tall, it’s hard to miss the 1892 Pilgrim Monument. It stands in honor of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ arrival. Afterall, Provincetown is where the Mayflower Compact was signed. Also on the property, Provincetown Museum is an old-fashioned history museum that chronicles the area’s history, from the Pilgrims to modern American theater to the monument’s construction.Travel this Spring

While you’re in the shopping spirit, clean out your closets of old home decorations, too, so you can make room from something new. If you like to decorate your home with new items every season, stop at Christmas Tree Shops. Don’t let the name foold you! The store sells decor for every season, and you can also buy home goods, snacks, and inexpensive souvenirs. Although several locations of this store are now found around the country, the store first opened on Cape Cod. So give it a whirl and be inspired; when you’re on vacation, Christmas Tree Shops is an amazing place to stock up on spring essentials for you to take back home. Find locations all over the Cape, including Sagamore (near Sandwich), Falmouth, Hyannis, West Dennis, and Orleans.
And when the decisions to buy, or not to buy, overwhelm you, hit the road for a dose of nature. Massage your senses with all things beauty by following one of several scenic routes on Cape Cod, each affording incredible vistas of the peninsula. The best one, though, is Route 6A, which crosses from one side of the Cape to the other along Cape Cod Bay. Another benefit is that it has less traffic than Route 6, otherwise known as the Mid-Cape Highway. Along the drive, you’ll pass historic homes and buildings, antique shops and general stores, and drive through some of the oldest villages in the country. Because of that, the road has been designated a National Scenic Byway, and National Geographic has called it one of the most scenic drives in the world. More details on the drive next month!
As soon as the flowers and trees start to bloom in March, get a bird’s eye view of the peninsula from above. It’s stunning, and it’s also easy to do by booking a scenic flightseeing tour with Stick’n Rudder Aero Tours at Chatham Airport. Ride high in either a 2-passenger Waco YMF5 Bi-Plane or a 3-passenger Cessna C172 Skyhawk. While you’re in the air, expect to see the Cape’s gorgeous beaches, harbors, seals, the SS James Longstreet shipwreck and Provincetown Monument, as well as many other points of interest. Your pilot will point out these sites as you flyover and provide some historical information about Cape Cod, too. Fly for as short at 15 minutes or as long as an hour.
We’re partial; we think Ocean Edge Resort’s own golf course is the best on the island. After all, it’s the only course in the region designed by professional golfer Jack Nicklaus. But maybe you’d like to play the field abit, and see what else is out there. Cotuit Highground Golf Club is in Cotuit (near Mashpee), Cranberry Valley Golf Course is in Harwich, and Chatham Seaside Links is in Chatham. They’re all welcoming, and they’re all beautiful, but if you have to pick a second best to Ocean Edge, opt for mini golf instead. Whether you’re golfing with a young family or are on a date, consider playing a round of mini golf at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf in South Yarmouth. The course features bridges, caverns, waterfalls, and plenty of shots at a hole in one. After a game, you can play in the arcade and enjoy some ice cream. Quite different in style from Pirate’s Cove, Susan’s Garden Mini Golf in Dennis Port is a classic 1950s course that has been restored to present-day standards. While you play, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful perennial gardens.
Finish your Spring preview with a taste of what’s been brewing since last season and pours like liquid gold from the taps. If you’re in Hyannis while you’re exploring the Cape, stop by Cape Cod Beer to get a taste of locally favored brews. The brewery, established in 2004, makes a variety of pale ales, porters, double IPAs, and more. Opt for a growler to share with your group as a great way to relax after biking, fishing, sightseeing, or doing any other activities on the Cape. Choose a flight to try a little bit of everything. While you’re there, you can take a tour of the brew facility and watch a presentation about how the brewery makes the beer. Hungry for a quick bite? On-site food trucks and pop-up kitchens offer awesome fare to pair with the brews.Travel the Cape’s Museum Trail
Travel the Cape’s Museum Trail
It’s a digital initiative as much as it is a physical journey that connects the dozens of museums across the Cape. Established in October 2015, the idea ultimately aimed to unite museum directors, share resources, and promote tourism from Woods Hole, Bourne, and Sandwich in the Upper Cape to Brewster and Chatham in the Lower Cape to Provincetown at the tip of the Outer Cape. There are many ways to plan your visit to the best museums on the Cape Cod Museum Trail, but we suggest getting started close to home.
Founded in 1964, the Brewster Historical Society preserves local history and artifacts, specifically the restored Cobb House Museum and Windmill Village. Cobb House dates back to 1799 and has five permanent galleries. During warmer months, when the house isn’t open for tours, you can enjoy the grounds and garden. Windmill Village next to Drummer Boy Park is home to Higgins Farm Windmill, Harris-Black House, and Hopkins Blacksmith Shop. Again, the buildings are open to explore from late June through Labor Day Weekend, including blacksmith demos every weekend, but will have limited hours during the off-season. Check their website for any events scheduling and for regular visiting hours.

We’ll celebrate Halloween this month, so it’s only fitting you and yours go on a haunted tour to get properly spooked. Cape Cod’s Haunted & History Tour Co leads groups out of Barnstable Village taking each excitable guest to see 10 historic and haunted places along Old King’s Highway. Some of the sites include The Superior Court House, The Hedge House, and inside The Oldest Wooden Jail in America. You’ll get to enter Cobb's Hill Cemetery, too, and while you’re there, listen to the stories that come from the other side of the grave. Exceptional to this spot, you’ll be handed a digital voice recorder as your guide teaches you how to collect EVP's (Electronic Voice Phenomenon/voices of the dead). Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be free to walk the cemetery to try and capture evidence yourself. All along the way, your guide will fill your head with haunting tales of yore, ghosts and all. Tours run every night of the week except Monday and Friday. You can also book the Ghost Hunter Tour to hear haunting tales about the town. The haunted history tours are about two hours, while the ghost hunter tours are about three hours. Tickets for adults run $15 and children 8 to 12 are $8. Kids younger than 8 are free. Find your way to the Coast Guard Heritage Museum on Main Street in Barnstable by 7:00 pm.
In keeping with the spirit of fall and Halloween, picking out a pumpkin is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Too big for a souvenir? How about a slice of pumpkin pie instead? Cob Webb Farm in West Barnstable and Coonamessett Farm in East Falmouth have pumpkins of all sizes, plus, at Coonamessett, Peck of Dirt Bakery is serving up fall-flavored treats. Cob Webb Farm offers hayrides, and Coonamessett Farm lets you visit with its animals as well. On Sunday, October 23rd, visiting artists, Low Pressure Band will play original bluesy songs with a touch of country. Later in the month, on the 29th, Coonamessett Farm hosts its annual Halloween celebration with a blueberry maze, pumpkin painting, face painting, hayrides and other activities for costumed kids and adults! Want more? Bourne Farm, also in Falmouth, celebrates the season with Pumpkin Day, a festival early in the month, that features hayrides, pony rides, a petting zoo, and more.
Oktoberfest celebrations draw thousands of thirsty adults every year under big white tents in cities all over the country, and a few Cape Cod towns host a few of their own. We particularly enjoy Oktoberfest in Chatham with its old-fashioned games, German beer and food, live music, and more. On Saturday, October 22nd, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm, at Kate Gould Park and Chatham Town Hall, find fun for the whole family with local musicians– Chatham Band, Polka Dan’s Beat Box Band, The Rafters, and Super Soulshine– keeping the beat all the while. Visiting vendors will include Captain’s Table, Chatham Harvesters, Dancing Spoons Food Truck, Depot Dogs Food Truck, Devil’s Purse Beer Garden, Fraulein’s Bakery, Little Beach Baker, MacSweets, Mom & Pops Food Truck, and Slyk Shades serving up enough chilled beer, hot bratwurst, hearty stews, and soft bavarian pretzels to keep you fueled all afternoon long. Don’t miss a walk through the larger than life Pumpkin People display in the park while you’re there– perfect for that fun fall family portrait!
Of course, should you feel the need to walk it off, or simply get out in the woods to watch the trees turn their fantastic crimson and gold, take a hike! We shared a few trails and public garden displays last month that we guarantee will satisfy your color craving throughout the season. Any questions, ask our friendly concierge when you arrive; we’ll be happy to point you toward to best activities in the area.See Autumn in All of its Golden Glory

Elena works hard to ensure that each guest’s experience is unique by offering personalized services to make them feel right at home. She loves to share her favorite activities with guests, including golf, beach activities, whale watching, water sports, dining, spa services. "I love working with people and being in the center of the action" she explains. "What inspires me is knowing at the end of the day that I helped make someone’s stay memorable, and memories are priceless!"
To learn more about Elena, we asked her a few questions about her career in hospitality and her role as Front Office Director at Ocean Edge. Here’s what she had to say:
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you started working in hospitality.
My career in hospitality started quite accidentally when I came to the U.S. as a J1 student some 20 years ago. I worked on the Cape for a summer in a small B&B and the following year had a chance to return back. I have lived on the Cape since then and this is now my home. Working in a small B&B helped me learn all aspects of hotel operation and it definitely helped showcase one in particular: the personalized care we offer to guests. Ever since then I was hooked. I find reward in establishing relationships with our guests and I carry those friendships with me through years, no matter where I work.
What exactly does a Front Office Director at a resort do?
Front Office has a key role when it comes to guest experience, and I supervise all areas of the front of the house. We are the first ones to meet and greet guests and we are the last ones to make an impact, ensuring each guest leaves happy.
What does excellent guest service mean to you?
Personalized service is what comes to mind. Every guest is unique, and their experience should reflect that. It is our job to recognize it, be intuitive, and make every interaction with our guests meaningful.
What are some of the key attractions near the resort not to be missed?
I definitely recommend going on an oyster farm tour at the Brewster Flats. And everyone has to go on a whale watch, it’s such an incredible experience! I take my kids every year and never get tired of it.
When we say the word "hospitality", what comes to mind?
"Welcome home!" For many of our returning guests (especially during the summer season), this becomes their "home away from home." We want to be sure to cater to such traditions and keep bringing them back.
What are you excited about sharing with our guests this upcoming season?
Everything the resort has to offer—and we have so much: golf, beach fires, water sports, dining, spa, and the list goes on!
